Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What are this year's deadlines?
Student registration deadline: 19th April, 2013
Test and reference deadline: 26th April, 2013
When do we hear whether we have been successful?
We will let you know of the outcome of the application by mid-May.
What is the application process?
The application process is in three stages:
1. Teachers provide the names and emails of up to 2 students who they would
like to recommend for the Senior Physics Challenge. Please check with your
students that they have received our emails inviting them to apply.
2. Students enter their GCSE results, AS and A-level choices as well as
performance in any external competitions such as the various maths
challenges. They are then required to answer some short maths and physics questions of a
typical level required for the summer school.
3. When a student has completed these maths and physics questions their teacher will
receive an email asking them to confirm the GCSE and A-level information
entered by the student as correct and to provide a written recommendation for
each student. At this point you will also view the maths questions and answers
provided by your students.
I am a student. Can I apply directly?
No, we are afraid that applications are done in conjunction with schools.
Can we have a previous year's maths test for practice?
It is not our policy to release previous years' tests. Only common material
from GCSE and early AS (or equivalent) mathematics and physics will be
assumed. We will only test concepts with which you will be familiar and will
be using during your courses.
My date of birth cannot be entered because the year of my birth is not listed.
Due to legal reasons we are unable to take students who are under 16.
Students who will only turn 17 in their final school year can be considered on
an individual basis. If you are older than 18, then please ask your teacher to write to us explaining
your particular circumstances at spcphy@hermes.cam.ac.uk.
What are the costs?
The summer school does not charge any fees. Also, we are able to cover (with
support from our sponsors - see Colleges and the Ogden Trust below) the cost of accommodation and evening
meals. Students are expected to arrange their own travel and lunch, which is
available in the canteen (typically £5.00 per meal).
